Here are some guidance on classification of WIFI antenna.
Omnidirectional
Omnidirectional antenna are designed to provide a signal in a full 360 degree radius.
Ideal for applications where you either wish to transmit from a central node to users scattered all around the area.
Also for picking up wireless signals within a 360 degree radius of your position
Outdoor or Indoor usage.
Patch/Directional antenna
More focused than an omnidirectional antenna.
Typically transmit an oval shape with approx 30 degrees beam width.
ideal for use in office locations, ie placed at one end of room to provide coverage for it's entire length.
Can also be used outdoors to provide short distance point to point links or as the customer end of a point to multipoint network.
Parabolic antenna
Very narrow beamwidth.
Ideal for point to point bridge links.
Parabolic antenna can also be used for customer end of point to multipoint network.
Mesh antennas are low cost but are outperformed by much higher cost solid dish designs.
Outdoor use.
Sector Antenna
Beamwidth ranges from 30 - 180 degrees.
Designed for base station applications in point to multipoint applications such as Wireless ISP
Outdoor use.
